Pole Bean (Kentucky Wonder) is an American heirloom that has been grown continuously since at least 1855, one of the oldest and most reliable pole beans in cultivation and the standard against which every other pole bean is measured. Kentucky Wonder produces long (7–9 inch), slightly curved, flattened pods with a distinctive slight "seam" along the back edge and a meaty, full-flavored taste that is noticeably richer and more complex than bush bean varieties — a quality attributed to its long season of gradual development climbing toward full sun. The pods are stringless when harvested young at 5–6 inches, developing a slight string at the suture line if allowed to fully mature. Plants grow 6–8 feet tall and are among the most productive pole beans per square foot of garden space, yielding abundantly over a long season from a single planting.
Install sturdy support before planting — Kentucky Wonder vines are heavy when loaded with pods. Traditional methods include: bamboo teepees (6 poles tied at top), wire cylinders, or string stretched between posts at 6–8 feet height. Sow seeds directly in warm soil (above 60°F) after last frost, 1 inch deep and 4 inches apart. Plant 3–4 seeds per pole base for teepee systems. Kentucky Wonder is nitrogen-fixing; avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer, which produces vigorous vines with poor pod production. Water consistently at the base — 1 inch per week minimum, more during hot weather. Pod production begins 60–65 days from sowing and continues for 6–8 weeks on healthy vines. Harvest frequently — every 2–3 days — when pods are 6 inches long, firm, and just beginning to show slight bean bumps inside. Pods left to fully mature (seeds swell noticeably) are still excellent as shell beans but signal the plant to stop producing new flowers. For a fresh bean harvest, remove oversize pods immediately. Kentucky Wonder beans freeze well after blanching 3 minutes in boiling salted water and cooling in ice water; they also dry beautifully as brown-seeded dry beans (let pods dry completely on the vine, then shell). A single 10-foot row of Kentucky Wonder typically yields 8–12 pounds of fresh beans over the season.
